SPECIFIC TOPIC INFORMATION S3 Standard Grade Chemistry Between December 2011 and end of January 2012 pupils will be working through Topic 7 (Properties of substances) then moving on to Topic 5 (Fuels). S4 Standard Grade Chemistry Between December 2011 and end of January 2012 pupils will be working through Topics 11 (Metals) and 12 (Corrosion). Intermediate 2 Chemistry Between December 2011 and end of January 2012 pupils will be working through the remainder of Unit 2, in preparation for the prelims in February 2012: (1) fats and oils, (2) plastics and synthetic fibres, (3) carbohydrates, (4) enzymes and (5) proteins. Higher Chemistry Between December 2011 and end of January 2012 pupils to cover the remaining Unit 2 material, with a view to revising for their (1) fats and oils, (2) synthetic polymer molecules (addition and condensation polymers), (3) Specialist polymers ( KevlarTM, polyethenol, polyethyne) and (4) proteins and enzymes. In addition, some Unit 3 material (Chemical Industry, Hess’s Law and Equilibrium) will also be covered since they will be included in the prelim exam. Advanced Higher Chemistry Between December 2011 and end of January 2012 pupils to cover the following Unit 3 material, with a view to preparing for the prelim exams in February 2012 : (1) Reaction types, Nucleophiles, Electrophiles, Notation, Sigma bonding in alkanes and sigma / pi bonding in alkenes, (2) Radical substitution reactions and mechanisms, (3) SN1 and SN2 nucleophilic substitution reactions and mechanisms,: (4) Preparation of alkenes (elimination reactions :dehydration of alcohols, base induced elimination of haloalkanes), (5) Reactions of alkenes (electrophilic addition reactions and mechanisms), (6) Addition of hydrogen halides and addition of water to alkenes: Markovnikoffs rule. |
