Welcome to the Physical Education Department

We aim to make Physical Education an enjoyable and accessible experience for all our pupils. Physical Education has the capacity to develop a pupil’s physical, cognitive, emotional and social skills irrespective of their ability. This subject is studied by all pupils since it lies in the core area of the curriculum from S1 to S6. It is our belief that an individual who passes through our doors will be physically educated and leave with a knowledge and understanding of the following factors.

A healthy attitude and understanding towards personal fitness.

The physical skills of the pupil.

The social skills, social awareness and attitude.

The worthwhile use of leisure time throughout a pupil’s life in school and beyond.

Wearing of PE Kit

The Scottish Government has made healthy living a high priority and with this has come the implementation of a compulsory 2 hours of Physical Education a week for every pupil from S1 to S6. We were one of the first schools in Scotland to introduce this into the curriculum and this has increased the active participation of every pupil in the school. This has been extremely pleasing and encouraging to witness.  Pupils now receive 2 periods a week of Physical Education.

The appropriate PE kit for full participation is

  • Plain white t-shirt (no vests or low cut tops)
  • Dark blue or black shorts or track suit bottoms
  • Trainers suitable for indoor and outdoor, football/rugby boots are permitted for outdoor also

The only occasions where this changes is for outdoor rugby or football during the winter months. Pupils will be made aware of this at the time.

In some circumstances pupils may have  5, 7 or even 8 periods of Physical Education a week. This will depend on whether they chose the Intermediate 1/2 Skills for Work: Sport and Recreation, standard grade or Intermediate 2/Higher, course on top of the compulsory 2 hours of core Physical Education.

Pupils should have the appropriate amount of kit to accommodate for the number of lessons they have per week. Although the vast majority of pupils already wear the appropriate clothing it is our aim to get every pupil wearing the proper kit.

Candidates who enjoy Physical Education during S1, S2 and have a high percentage rate for succesfully bringing kit are encouraged to continue thier cognitive and social development through selecting Standard Grade. A student who embraces the course will have opportunities to:

  • Participate and develop their interest in physical activities and promote a  healthy way of life.
  • Develop an awareness of their own capabilities and physical development.
  • Study new and learned activities from a different perspective. Looking at the fitness requirements and skills required for a successful performance.
  • Promote a sense of behaviour, sportsmanship and discipline.
  • Be assessed in the areas of practical performance, knowledge and understanding and evaluation

Course Details

In Standard Grade Physical Education, pupils from S3 and S4 will study four key areas:

Activities: Exploring facts about structure and principles relating to function to support safe performance, to provide a basis on which to make decisions affecting health and to promote understanding of the effects of physical activity.

The Body: looking into facts related to specific skills and techniques in particular activities and the principles which are generally applicable, such as mechanics or movement analysis or methods of practice.

Skills: including facts which identify the roles to be played by different participants, the procedures which are appropriate to different activities in terms of rules, strategies or organisation, and principles which apply to relationships between individuals and management of groups of people in different environments.

Evaluating: using self and peer assement, video cameras, flip cameras, checklists and observations to help identify weak spots in our performance and give feedback to improve it.
