Aims of the Maths Department

Statement of Aims

The essential aim of mathematical education is to help pupils to learn how to describe , tackle and ultimately solve problems which require the use of mathematical knowledge and techniques.

Departmental Aims

At all stages (S1-S6), and at all levels, the department is seeking to :

  1. reflect whole-school aims and policies
  2. contribute to pupils' personal development and overall education.
  3. enable pupils to develop, to the limit of their capability, the mathematical skills and understanding required for their present needs, both in and out of school, and for the future demands of adult life, employment, further study and training.
  4. develop an appreciation and enjoyment of mathematics, and awareness of its importance in society and in the development of technology within mathematical applications.
  5. provide a suitable, caring and happy learning environment within which effective learning and teaching takes place.
  6. provide suitable courses for pupils of all learning abilities, and to ensure that all pupils' needs are fully met.

Aims of the various stages (S1-S6)

S1/S2

  1. continue development of mathematical skills, knowledge and understanding.
  2. assign pupils to an individual course, tailored to their abilities and needs, where every pupil achieves quantifiable success.
  3. establish individual, paired, group and whole-class work.
  4. introduce problem solving and investigative strategies.
  5. consolidate and establish practical skills.
  6. ensure a basic competence in the management of money.
  7. influence behavioural attitudes and contribute to social and interpersonal development.

S3/S4

  1. develop problem solving skills through interpreting information, selecting a strategy, processing data, and communicating solutions.
  2. further develop investigative skills.
  3. encourage pupils to work co-operatively to solve problems.
  4. ensure pupils achieve their full potential in mathematics.
  5. prepare pupils for national examinations.
  6. contribute to pupils' awareness and ability to use technology.
  7. influence behavioural attitudes and contribute to social and interpersonal development.

S5/S6

  1. develop self study skills.
  2. prepare students for national examinations.
  3. influence behavioural attitudes and contribute to social and interpersonal development.
