The Art and Design Department offers all pupils of all ability levels opportunities to explore a wide range of activities and to acquire skills and knowledge that will prove invaluable in life after school. The courses make demands on pupils and some artistic talent is needed in order to achieve academic success in this subject. The department believes however that commitment and an enthusiastic working attitude of the pupils is the most important aspect of all coursework.

Enjoyment of the subject is our top priority.

Feedback from parent's evenings has shown that the enjoyment factor plays an important part in the pupils approach to our subject.

We define "Art" in its broadest sense and the courses cover areas which are relevant to the lives of the pupils. Music, Films, Fashion, Sports are popular areas of study but the department is also aware of traditional arts concepts and our artistic heritage.

The Aims of The Art Department

• To contribute to the overall aims of the school in terms of personal and social development of the pupils.
• To provide a friendly, relaxed but nevertheless rigorous working environment in which pupils can excel regardless of ability.
• To provide pupils with opportunities to use a wide range of media in a creative way. For example: pencil, paint, ceramics, computers, textiles and product design.
• To encourage pupils to develop critical skills in the context of Art and Design,.
• To encourage pupils top develop problem solving skills in the context of Art and Design.
• To encourage pupils to use their Art and Design skills for the good of the whole school and wider community.
