ART AND DESIGN - Homework Policy

The Art and Design Department believes that good homework is a vital part of all coursework from S1 – S6. There is no doubt that good homework habits that start in S1 lead to better pupil motivation and will consolidate and enhance work done in classroom.

Homework in the Art and Design Department can take several forms and are relevant to all year groups.

Skill Practice:

Working on Basic Drawing Skills in a variety of materials and mediums.

Source Materials:

Looking, Finding and Collecting various materials that are relevant to project work done in class.

Research:

Reading and Writing in support of Critical Work done in class.

S1 – S2

Homework is done throughout the year and is related to projects done in class. All work is marked and included in the final assessment before S1 and S2 reports.

S3 – S4

Pupils must take responsibility for homework as they get older. Many of our pupils take their folders home to back up work done in class. Good drawing practice is important and this homework is given out by the department to build up confidence in handling media.

S5 – S6

All S5 – S6 courses cannot be completed successfully without homework. Every opportunity must be taken at Study Support and at Home so the coursework can be done within the time available. Study periods are also available for many pupils so work can be done within the department.

Study Support

Study Support is available for S4 – S6 pupils throughout the week.

Some pupils prefer to work at lunchtime. This has proved popular with pupils of all ability ranges from all year groups.

The Art Department offers materials, access to the computers and practical help.

Equipment Loan

Pupils can borrow books and materials from the department by using our Equipment Loan Service. This has proved popular with pupils working on S4 Critical essays.
