S1 Course Descriptor

The Art and Design course in year 1 of secondary builds on skills learned in primary school. Drawing as a fundamental skill, problem solving and developing critical awareness in key areas.

Homework is vital in year one and backs up work done in class. This involves drawing, information gathering and research.

All work is researched and pupils are encouraged to be involved in this process.

National guidelines are used for assessment and the majority of pupils should reach levels D or E by the end of S1. A small number may also achieve beyond this level and work within Level F.

S2 Course Descriptor

The Art and Design course builds on skills gained in S1. Drawing as fundamental skill, problem solving and developing visual and critical awareness are key areas. These are the foundations of later coursework in years 3 – 6.

Since time is limited homework is regarded as a vital element of the course, providing opportunities for research, information gathering and the practice of skills.

All work is assessed and pupils are encouraged to get involved in the assessment process.

National guidelines of assessment are followed and Level E should be attainable by most pupils by the end of S2. Level F should be attainable in certain areas by some pupils and completed by a few in the course of this year.

Levels of Attainment

Level A

Should be attainable in the course of P1 – P3 by almost all pupils.

Level B

Should be attainable in P3 or even earlier, but certainly by most in P4.

Level C

Should be attainable in the course of P4 – 6 by most pupils.

Level D

Should be attainable by some pupils in P5 – 6 or even earlier, but certainly by most in P7.

Level E

Should be attainable by some pupils in P7 - S1, but certainly by most in S2.

Level F

Should be attainable in part by some pupils, and completed by a few pupils, the course of P7 – S2.
