History and Modern Studies - Course Choice S5/S6


Courses - S5/6

Both History and Modern Studies are available at various levels in S5 and S6.

History Higher

The study of history at higher level builds on the skills gained at Standard Grade, in particular those of evaluating and critical thinking. The Higher extends student awareness of their own heritage and identity in local, national, European and world wide contexts.

Course Details

Option C Later Modern History

  1. Britain 1850 - 1979
  2. The USA 1919 – 1968 : The Large Scale State
  3. Appeasement and the Road to War 1939

Assessment

Assessment will be continuous i.e. end of unit plus an extended essay.

Formal Assessment

The final exam consists of two papers; Paper 1 is based on essay writing, Paper 2 on source material. Pupils have also to submit an extended essay. The extended essay is submitted in March to the SQA for external marking. Students carry out their own research on an area chosen by them from the course, for further investigation. This essay is worth 30 marks (30% of their total grade).

History Intermediate 1/2

Course Details

  1. From Cradle to Grave (Scottish and British Social Welfare 1890 - 1951)
  2. European and World : In the Shadow of the Bomb
  3. Free at Last (Race Relations USA 1918 - 1968)

Assessment

Assessments are source based. Candidates have to complete an extended response chosen from one of the three areas. This is usually done in March and marked externally.

History Advanced Higher

The study of History at Advanced Higher level aims to develop skills of analysing issues, developments and events, drawing conclusions and evaluating sources. An excellent course for those planning further study at university in any field.

Course Details

Germany : Versailles to the outbreak of the Second World War

This includes studying the creation of the military defeat in World War1, the creation of the Weimar Republic , the November revolution and the Treaty of Versailles. We also study the social and political instability through the Stresemann years of relative stability eventually examining the collapse of the Republic and the rise of Nazism.

Assessment

  • Paper 1: 2 x 25 mark essays
  • Paper 2: 3 Source questions worth 40 marks
  • Dissertation of 4000 words (marked externally)

Modern Studies Higher and Intermediate 2

Course Details

The study of modern studies at Higher level builds on the skills gained at Standard Grade and Intermediate level in all social subjects, in particular those of evaluating and critical thinking. Higher Modern Studies allows the student to study in depth the political and social processes involved in the following areas:

  • Power conflict and resolution
  • Formation and application of values
  • Social and cultural differences
  • Social and economic development

These processes generate a series of four study themes which fall into two syllabus headings of UK Politics and Society and International Issues. These are summarised as follows:

  • UK Politics and Society Politics in society
  • Social Issues in the UK Health and Wealth in society
  • International Issues Ethnic minorities in the USA

Assessment

Internal Assessment

Assessment will be continuous i.e. end of unit and during the study of different units where appropriate.

External Assessment

The final exam consists of two papers, the first part of the paper based on essay writing and the second part consisting of evaluating questions and the writing of a report

Modern Studies Intermediate 2

Intermediate 2 follows a similar course structure to that of Higher and is both internally and externally assessed.
