Art and Design Intermediate 1Recommended Entry This is a course for pupils who have not worked on art courses in S3/S4 and would like to take art in S5. This course would suit a foundation level pupil. Practical work and some written work are needed. There is no practical exam. The folios done in class and Art Studies are marked and will decide whether a pupil passes or fails. Course Details and Assessment
Art and Design Intermediate 2This is a course for pupils who have finished Intermediate 1 in S4 and would like to try some aspects of Higher Grade. This course would suit pupils who like the practical aspects of art and design yet find the written section of the course too demanding. Practical work and written work is needed. Higher Art and Design courses are in place for all pupils. It is important that pupils choose the course which best suits their ability and level of skill. The grades achieved in S4 should act as a guide. All pupils must be aware of the massive amount of work needed to gain a pass at Higher level Art and Design. Homework, for example, is vital and extra work done in study support classes will also help pupils. The most important factor is the level of commitment pupils bring to each area of the course they choose.Art and Design HigherRecommended Entry This is a course for pupils who have reached an A pass at Intermediate 2 and would like to work at an advanced level of study. Practical work and a substantial amount of written work are required over the school year. Some pupils who gained a B pass at Intermediate 2 may want to sit Higher Art and Design. This will be looked at on a case by case basis based on effort and application in fourth year. Course Details

Art and Design - Advanced HigherThis course is on offer for pupils who wish to progress and develop skills learned in Higher. Work produced is sent to S.Q.A. for assessment but many pupils use the Advanced Higher as a folio building exercise also. The course is done in the form of an Expressive or Design Enquiry. The approach is process based. All candidates are engaged in:

Examples of Advanced Higher Life Drawing and Painting Folio This area of study is vital for any pupil who has the ambition to apply for an art or design college course. In the last few years pupils from this school have gained entry to Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art Dundee, St.Martins College London and Heriot Watt University Edinburgh. All the folios were completed in the Art Department in S6. Ceramics: Introduction to HandbuildingIntermediate 2 Course This course is available for pupils who like to work in the Art Department but do not want the pressure of doing a Higher Course. Suitable for S5 and S6 pupils but available for some S4 pupils who have the aptitude for 3D work. Results over the last year or two have been excellent and pupils have a good amount of freedom to pick themes that suit. OUTCOMES
